Soon. Soon. The wolf won’t stop reminding me it won’t be long before we can take Emma and bond her to us forever. Since I’m hunting for breakfast, it means his voice is the louder one in my head.

I don’t mind. It’s not so much like torture anymore. Because he’s right, it will be soon. Maybe today. It seems like she’s fully healed now, and she had no problem coming yesterday.

It bothers her. I know it. I sense it. She’ll understand once we’re able to mate.

Besides, I don’t think she’s as upset with me as she’s confused by what she’s feeling. Now, instead of only wishing I had somebody to tell me how to deal with all of this, I wish there was someone she could talk to. A human who’s already mated with someone like me, who can ease her worries or fears, whatever’s bothering her.

We’ll have to figure it out together as soon as I complete the bond.

I can’t go far from the cabin since it would mean leaving Emma alone for too long. If it were just me, I wouldn’t care. I’d wander for hours, even days. A wolf can take care of itself outdoors. Sometimes, I like it better, seeing the world through my wolf’s eyes. Things are simpler.

I can’t take the simple choice now. I have a mate to think about. Lucky for me, there’s a family of hares nesting nearby. They’re fast, but I’m much faster.

This time, I’m smart enough to shift back before I get too close to the cabin. I don’t want her seeing me like this yet. Soon. Very soon.

I couldn’t have shifted at a better time. Not a heartbeat later, the door to the cabin opens, and a golden head pops out, swinging back and forth. She’s not looking for the outhouse. She’s looking for me and probably the wolf she’s so afraid of.

Because she’s trying to run away.

My wolf growls and threatens to burst out again. I almost want him to. It seems like fear is the only way to get her to listen. I watch, getting angrier with every step she takes. I know I should stop her right away, but no. No, I want her to think she got away. I want her to hope.

And then I’ll catch her, and she’ll know she was wrong to try.

She’s past the outhouse before she breaks into a run, which is when I start running behind her. “Where do you think you’re going?”

She throws a panicked look my way before running faster, tripping over roots and branches, crashing through the trees and brush. Her short, frantic breaths ring out loud in my ears, growing louder the closer I come. She’s breaking a sweat, and I’m not even winded.

Why is she doing this? I know she was aroused yesterday when she sucked my cock. I could smell it, becoming stronger the longer we went. Why would she run away now?

She stumbles and leans against a tree before pushing herself off, but it’s too late.
